Psilocybin’s noticeable effects usually end within hours, but that is not the same as how long a laboratory can detect it. After ingestion, the body converts psilocybin into psilocin and then rapidly breaks it down into metabolites. The exact detection window depends on the test, timing, amount, metabolism, and the laboratory’s method.
Quick answer
In a controlled human study, free psilocin in urine usually fell to the test’s quantification limit by about 24 hours. More sensitive testing that measures conjugated metabolites can extend detectability. Standard workplace drug panels do not usually include psilocybin, but specialized toxicology tests can look for psilocin or related metabolites.
There is no guaranteed “clean by” time. A person facing medical, employment, legal, or athletic testing should not rely on an online countdown.
Effects and detection are different clocks
The experience may begin roughly 30 to 90 minutes after an oral product and continue for several hours. Feeling normal again does not prove every metabolite has left the body. In the same way, a specialized test may detect exposure after the noticeable effects have ended.
Psilocybin itself is a prodrug: the body converts it to active psilocin. A toxicology review identifies psilocin-O-glucuronide as the main urinary metabolite used in forensic testing (PubMed).
How long can shrooms show in urine?
Urine is the most discussed specimen because metabolites are excreted through the kidneys. In a small controlled study of eight volunteers, free psilocin peaked in urine during the two-to-four-hour collection period and usually reached the test’s quantification limit by 24 hours. Treating the sample to release conjugated psilocin extended detection (PubMed).
That study does not create a universal deadline. Modern methods can be more sensitive, and real-world mushroom products vary in potency. Hydration, kidney function, repeated exposure, timing, and laboratory procedures also matter.
What about blood tests?
Psilocin can be measured in blood with specialized methods, but it is cleared relatively quickly and appears at low concentrations. A 2024 forensic paper described a method sensitive enough to quantify psilocin in whole blood, while noting that more research is needed to characterize its use (PubMed).
Blood testing is generally more useful near the time of exposure than days later. Only the testing laboratory can explain what its method measures and how results are interpreted.
Can hair detect psilocybin?
Hair testing can sometimes provide a longer historical record for certain drugs, but psilocybin hair testing is specialized and much less standardized than common workplace panels. Cosmetic treatment, hair growth, contamination controls, the laboratory method, and the amount used all affect interpretation. A hair result cannot show the exact time or degree of impairment.
Do standard drug tests include mushrooms?
Many routine five-panel and ten-panel workplace tests focus on substances such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and PCP. Psilocybin is generally not included unless a broader or specifically ordered test is used. Policies differ, however, and a sample may be sent for additional testing.
Never assume a test excludes psilocybin. Ask the testing organization or review the written panel if the answer matters.
What changes the detection window?
- Test type and sensitivity: a specialized laboratory can detect different compounds and lower concentrations than a basic screen.
- Amount and product strength: mushroom weight does not equal measured psilocybin content.
- Time since exposure: blood and urine concentrations change quickly.
- Repeated use: closely spaced exposure may change the amount present at collection.
- Individual biology: metabolism, liver and kidney function, age, and other factors vary.
- Sample handling: storage and preparation influence unstable compounds such as psilocin.
Why “detox” tricks are unreliable
Excessive water, supplements, saunas, and commercial cleanses do not create a dependable negative result. Overhydration can be dangerous and may produce a diluted sample that requires recollection. Trying to manipulate a test may also violate workplace or legal rules.
The safest approach is not to use an illegal or prohibited substance when testing is possible. If a result is medically important, disclose what was taken to the clinician so they can treat symptoms accurately.

The bottom line
Noticeable effects and laboratory detection are not the same. Free psilocin may fall sharply within a day, but sensitive specialized testing can look for metabolites and no online estimate can guarantee a negative result. The laboratory’s actual test and collection timing determine the answer.
